Forgetting Something?! or Someone?

Adventures, With Kids — By admin on November 13, 2008 at 7:33 pm

I had some dental work done yesterday. Any time I have any kind of injection, it doesn’t matter what for, my body freaks out. I get all shaky and weak and get flu-like symptoms. Its bad. I am sure it is all psychosomatic but still.. I got home and sat on the couch and the next thing I know the phone is ringing and my husband is asking if I want him to pick the kids up from school. I ask him what time it was and I realize that even if I left right then I would be late picking them up. I had fallen asleep!! I felt horrible. What kind of mother does this sort of thing? This is the kind of stuff you hear about in the news. He said he had a feeling he needed to call.
So this morning I have this horrible nagging feeling that I am forgetting something. I mean I actually feel like I am going to have a panic attack because it is so unsettling. I couldn’t put my finger on it. Not the “did I leave the iron on?”, much much worse. I just couldn’t shake the feeling. Even so, I made it all day avoiding catastrophe.
Fast forward to this evening. I was busy today and had skipped lunch. It was dinner time but I had an appointment to get my hair done so I didn’t have time to eat. My husband stops in the salon to ask if I could drive the kids home from tutoring and dance (they were in the same office complex) so he could put the two little kids to bed. “of course”. So I am in a hurry to get home so I could eat something before I pass out. ( you see where this is going, don’t you?) I get the kids from tutoring and rush home. I walk in the door and realize I have left NumberTwo at dance. Yep, I forgot her. Let me just go on record as saying she was not actually out of her class yet and hubby did make it before so. And that I have never forgotten one of them before. Please tell me I am not the only one who has done this!
I am going to sleep and hopefully revitalize my brain. Otherwise we are not leaving the house tomorrow.

Oh dear the memories this post conjured in my artery hardening brain. I’ve forgotten all four (not at the same time) of my kids at some time or another but not in ways that was unsafe to them. Once we were driving home from a football game and stopped at a quick stop to get something to drink and take a pit stop. We all piled back in the car and as we were driving away, there was giggling and whispering in the backseat. I turned around to ask what was going on and one of them said…..”uh….you left Clay at the quick stop.”. I was horrified. For the record, Clay was 16 and we’d only driven about a block so we got back really quickly. You’re not a bad mother if you get them all raised and out of the house in one piece. :)

I’m enjoying your comments on my blog. For the record, we like to have fun and sometimes the subject is a bit off the wall so I hope you don’t get offended. I’m a Christian too and in fact, heading to the Women of Faith conference tonight. I believe God wants me to have fun as long as it’s not mean spirited. :)

I came over from Midlife Slices.
Once when Daughter #2 was in middle school, she called to say she was sick at school and asked me to come and pick her up. I was in the middle of a task at work and thought I would complete the task and then leave to get her. Once the task was completed, I went on to the next thing and completely forgot about her for about 45 minutes. No Mother of the Year award for me that year. LOL I think we all do this when we have too much on our minds. You have 5 kids so I’m sure you always have a lot on your mind. Sometimes I would have to chant, don’t forget to pick up the kids over and over so I wouldn’t forget. It’s a clear signal that you need a break. Do something wonderful for yourself.

Oh my! At one time I forgot my daughter one day, my son the next and then my daughter again on the third day. They started leaving notes – big notes- in the seat of my car when they left for school. They are grown now but remind me of it often. Especially when I am supposed to pick up their children. They will call me several times to see if I remember and then call to make sure I actually got them. Not that I’m forgetful but once you do it to you own they never forget!

Oh my gosh, I just had to say that I have the EXACT same reaction to any kind of injection. It’s gotten to the point where I need to lay down first or my ears will start ringing and my vision starts to go …

    Lovely.
